Health Information Essentials

Good health information can help people prepare, ask clearer questions, and avoid dangerous misinformation. It is not the same as a diagnosis or treatment plan.

The course

This course introduces health literacy as an everyday skill. Learners practice evaluating health claims, separating general information from personal medical advice, and recognizing the role of licensed professionals and trusted local services.

Health misinformation can carry real harm. Knowing how to check a claim, communicate a concern, and connect with appropriate care can make families and communities safer.

Each module moves from a core concept to an activity that can be tried in everyday life, a classroom, or a community learning group.

    Information is not a diagnosis

    Understand the difference between general education, personal symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment—and why context matters in every health decision.

    Try itTake one health claim you encounter and label it: general information, a personal story, a professional recommendation, or an unsupported claim.

    Look for qualified, current sources

    Learn what to look for in health information: a credible organization, current guidance, transparent authorship, and a clear purpose.

    Try itCompare two health-information pages. Note who produced each one, when it was updated, and whether it names its evidence or professional review.

    Prepare better questions

    Practice organizing information and questions for a qualified clinician, pharmacist, public-health worker, or local health service.

    Know when help must be hands-on

    Recognize that online learning cannot assess urgent or personal medical needs, and learn to identify local qualified routes to care.
