Use place value to read, build, and compare whole numbers with confidence.

The concept

A digit does not have one fixed value. Its place tells us what it represents. In 52,407, the 5 means fifty thousand, the 2 means two thousand, the 4 means four hundred, the 0 means zero tens, and the 7 means seven ones. Reading a number by place makes its size visible instead of making it feel like a long string to memorize.

Expanded form is a useful way to show the value inside a number. For example, 52,407 can be written as 50,000 + 2,000 + 400 + 7. It helps you check whether digits were copied in the right order, compare close numbers, and explain your thinking to another person. A zero still matters because it holds a place open: 6,042 is very different from 642.

Use benchmarks and place value to decide which quantities are larger, smaller, closer, or farther apart.

The concept

Number sense is partly about knowing where a number belongs. A number line is an invisible tool you can carry in your head. If 4,998 is only two away from 5,000, you know it is very close to 5,000 even before doing any formal calculation. Benchmarks such as 10, 100, 1,000, and 10,000 help you notice scale quickly.

To order numbers, compare the largest place first. If that place is the same, move one place to the right. This is more reliable than looking only at the last digit. The same strategy works in maps, inventories, reading statistics, and planning a project: first understand the size and order of the quantities, then decide what calculation is useful.

Round for a useful estimate

Choose a sensible level of rounding and use estimates to plan and check exact work.

The concept

An estimate is not a careless answer. It is a fast, useful answer to a different question: about how much, how many, or how far? Before you need an exact total, an estimate can help you decide whether a plan is realistic, whether supplies are likely enough, or whether a calculator result is obviously wrong.

The place you round to depends on the decision. If you are estimating a total number of chairs for a room, rounding to the nearest hundred may be enough. If you are estimating the cost of two items, rounding to the nearest ten might be more useful. Say what your estimate means and do not use it where a safety-critical or exact measurement is required.

Calculate flexibly and check your result

Use friendly numbers, compensation, and inverse operations to solve and check everyday calculations.

The concept

Mental math does not mean doing every calculation in your head. It means noticing a simpler path. You can break a number apart, make a nearby friendly number, or compensate after an adjustment. For example, 398 is almost 400. Adding 400 is easy; then remove the 2 that was added too much.

A strong result deserves a check. Estimation checks the size of an answer. An inverse operation checks the relationship: addition can check subtraction, and subtraction can check addition. When a result will guide a purchase, a classroom plan, or a community project, take the extra moment to make sure it tells a believable story.
