The course

This course will introduce basic design thinking for everyday repairs and small projects. It will focus on planning, measurement, materials, risk awareness, and handoff points for qualified trades or engineering professionals.

Applied problem-solving can support household resilience, employability pathways, and more informed conversations about making, maintaining, and improving shared spaces.

    Define the problem before the solution

    Learn to describe what is happening, what success looks like, and what constraints matter before choosing a repair or design approach.

    Measure with care

    Practice recording dimensions, units, and tolerances clearly so a plan can be checked and communicated to others.

    Choose materials for the job

    Consider durability, local availability, cost, maintenance, and safety when evaluating material choices.

    Know when to stop and ask

    Recognize safety-critical work and the role of qualified tradespeople, engineers, electricians, and local building requirements.
